When you’re searching for a high-quality, heavy duty pickup truck, you’ve no doubt taken a look at what both gas and diesel powered engines bring to the table. Both carry their own advantages and benefits to you on both the road and worksite, so today we’ll take a look at how both gasoline and diesel engines operate!
Most vehicles today are powered through a process known as internal combustion. In both gasoline and diesel vehicles, your engine converts fuel into useful energy through four strokes: Intake, Compression, Combustion and Exhaust. Fuel mixes with air inside your motor, and pistons compress this mixture to give you the power you need to keep moving forward. Though this is how both gas and diesel engines give you the power you need on the road, their methods of doing so differ greatly.
As previously mentioned, gas-powered engines differ from diesel powered engines in the way that they convert fuel into energy. In a gasoline engine, fuel is taken in, compressed and ignited by spark plugs, which is where the term “internal combustion” comes from. This is by far the most common method of giving your vehicle energy, but it does have its limitations.
Diesel engines are different in their intake and ignition methods; before fuel is even added to a diesel engine, air is already being compressed. Thus, diesel fuel ignites upon contact with air, giving you much higher torque output at higher RPMs than you would normally be afforded with gasoline. In fact, it’s not uncommon for heavy duty trucks such as the Ford Super Duty to produce as much as 800 lb-ft of torque or more!
