When should you replace your vehicle’s tires?

We depend on our vehicles to provide us with hard-hitting and relentless performance, but they’re only able to run at optimal efficiency when your four friends are properly inflated and able to handle the elements. How to tell that your tires are going bad 

There are plenty of ways to notice when your tires aren’t performing like they should; the number one method that we’ve seen to work uses a penny and good judgment. This tried-and-true process involves inserting a penny into the treads of your tires. If you can see the top of Abe Lincoln’s head, that means your tread has been worn down to an unsafe level.  

You might also notice diminished performance and vibration as you drive; usually, this means that one or more of your tires are underinflated, and thus not level with the rest of the tires on your axle.  

Recommended mileage and time intervals between tire replacement 

There’s really no surefire way to know when you should be installing a fresh batch of tires on your vehicle. However, it’s recommended that you get them replaced when your tires are down to 4/32″ of available tread depth. Beyond this point, water can’t be dispersed as you drive through inclement conditions, and running on balds also increases your likelihood of slipping and sliding down the pavement.

Because of this, you should shoot for replacing your tires ever 25,000-50,000 miles or so; this is just a rough estimate, and other factors such as usage and conditions could come into play. Thus, it’s probably a good idea to get your treads replaced prior to the changing of the seasons, so you can be prepared for anything that arises.
